Seeds of Change

Integrated farming as a pathway to sustainability in Ethiopia

Across the vast and varied lands of Ethiopia, where the landscape unfolds from towering mountains to arid plains, farmers tirelessly work the soil that has nourished their families and supported the country’s economy for generations. In a rapidly changing world, these rural communities stand at the crossroads of tradition and transformation, facing challenges of historic proportions with a resilience rooted deep in the land they cultivate. A photographic report commissioned by the United Nations aims to tell these stories, capturing not just images but also the spirits of Ethiopian farmers at a pivotal moment in their existence.

Ethiopia, one of the countries with the highest share of agriculture in its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and workforce, sees the majority of its rural population engaged in agricultural activities. However, this sector faces a myriad of challenges: from climate changes threatening crops, to inadequate infrastructure limiting market access, to scarcity of resources like water. Yet, amidst these trials, a story of adaptation and hope emerges.
